Government Library services
Under the provisions of the Maharashtra Public Libraries Act, 1967, there is a provision for the establishment of special reference and district libraries under state central libraries and government departmental libraries as well as other required by the government. These libraries, set up to control the state's public library system, offer free library services to the citizens of the state, departmental and district levels.
| 1) Reference Section : Though all the Staff members are available for providing reference service, a separate Reference Section is provided in the spacious Central Hall of Town Hall building. Reference Assistant and other staff members are assisting the readers in the following areas – a) User Orientation – The new users visiting the Library are given information regarding use of the Library and its resources. These include imparting knowledge of organizational collections, sequences of books and periodicals arrangement, use of various services rendered by the library, use of uncatalogued etc. b) Other Assistance – Besides information, this section also assists in guiding the readers about using the catalogs and reference sources, in tracing the books, helping the readers in getting the books not available in the library through the inter-library loan from other libraries, solving problems of the readers in case of difficulties etc. |

2) Children Section With Financial Assistance from Raja Rammohun Roy Library Foundation, Kolkata a separate Children Section was set up in the premises of Town Hall on 5th September, 2009. Also there are two Children Section was set up in the premises of Sub Centre Andheri in 2010 and in the premises of Sub Centre Thane in 2011 3) Women Section
A Separate Women Section is established at Town Hall and other Sub Centres where the special collection for women is maintained. 4) Newspaper Section
The State Central Library receives 500 Newspaper in 14 prominent Indian Languages under Delivery of Books Act, 1954 (revised 1956) and Press & Registration Act. Everyday 1000 readers are taking advantage of this section. Bound volumes of selected 4 Newspapers are available from the year 1994 to till date. |

5) Periodicals Section The State Central Library receives 1500 Periodicals in 14 prominent Indian Languages under Delivery of Books Act, 1954 (revised 1956) and Press & Registration Act. Everyday 500 readers are taking advantages of this section. Bound volumes of selected 150 periodicals are available from the year 1997 to till date. 6) Government Gazetteers Services At Sub Centre J.J. Hospital Compound, Byculla, the bound volumes of State & Central Government Gazetteers are available for readers, researches from 1994 to till date. 7) Bibliographic Services Bibliography of Marathi Language books from year 1994 to 2012 is available for the readers, researches. 8) Computer Section To facilitate modern e-library services to all public from children, school-college, physically handicapped etc., 70 LCD Computer with internet connection, about 5000 Audio-Visuals are available at Town Hall, Andheri Sub Centre and Thane Sub Centre. 9) Reprographic Services Reprographic Service including Xerox facility is available at Town Hall and the Sub Centres. 10) Career Guidance Section Taking into Consideration the needs of young and career-making readers, Library has started a new section of books on Competitive Examinations. It consists of books on various entrance examinations such as GATE, IIT, MET, MPSC, UPSC, CET, CAT, SET/NET, etc. As well as books on general knowledge. On an average daily 380 students and other readers are taking advantages of this section. 11) Library Extension Services As a part of Library Extension Services, book exhibitions on various topics & occasions, seminars, lectures, workshops are conducted in the State Central Library. 12) Other Services :- i) Bulletin Board Services. ii) Newspaper Clipping Services. iii) E-Services. |
